My first words to you
Hi there, my name is Mario Ruy and I’m originally from Mexico City. I’m starting this blog to tell you interesting things about pottery but also to share with you how I got here and why I ended up in this beautiful art life. I believe it’s important to share my experience, not only so people can connect with me but also to help them in their own pottery journey.
This is a project I’ll start every year with something new, talking about my life while exploring glaze recipes and glaze tests, and sharing pictures of my work, flaws, and bloopers along the way.
The pottery community changed some of the materials we usually use to make glazes, and during this year, I’ll be testing how glazes evolve in the process. Glazes are especially meaningful to me because the colors I develop reflect my vision of how I want to see the world: always in happy, bright colors that bring me a sense of joy and peace. This is not at all about reinventing the wheel, but if you are passionate about something, I’m very sure the results at the end are deeply satisfying.
My goal is to develop 20 glaze recipes in an oxidation firing and also the process of how I develop my pieces and art work along the way. For now, I don’t have access to gas or wood fire—though I wish I did!—but my plan is to recreate glazes that my husband and I developed in Mexico when I first started on this path.
Long story short, I hope you find this blog as interesting, nourishing, meaningful and funny as I do.
Thank you for reading. See you every Monday at 9am!
Mario Ruy
